The story follows (Clark Gable), a hard-boiled city editor who clawed his way up through the "School of Hard Knocks" and holds a deep disdain for college-educated journalists. When his boss orders him to assist Erica Stone (Doris Day), a dedicated journalism professor, Gannon initially refuses. However, after meeting her and finding himself instantly attracted, he decides to pose as a novice student in her night class without revealing his true identity.
