Around week 4, chicks lose their fuzzy yellow down and start growing "real" feathers. They often look awkward and patchy during this transition. Act III: The Teenage "Pullet" Years (Weeks 6–20)

The chick "pips"—it uses a temporary "egg tooth" on its beak to poke a hole into the air cell at the blunt end of the egg, taking its first breath of air.
