Buying a trumpet is an exciting milestone, whether you’re a parent of a budding musician or an adult fulfilling a lifelong dream. However, because a trumpet is a precision-engineered tool, the difference between a high-quality instrument and a "trumpet-shaped object" can determine how long a student sticks with the hobby.
These are the "stepping stones." They offer better tonal quality and more professional features (like a first-valve slide thumb saddle) but aren't as expensive as professional horns.
Trumpets are generally categorized into three tiers. Knowing where you fit will prevent you from overspending or buying an instrument you’ll outgrow in six months.
Avoid "department store" trumpets. If a brand-new trumpet costs $100 and comes in a bright blue or red color, it is likely a toy that cannot be repaired by professional technicians because the metal is too soft or brittle.
