Balian returns to his simple life as a blacksmith in France. The film concludes with King Richard the Lionheart arriving at the village to recruit the "defender of Jerusalem" for a new Crusade. Balian finds Jerusalem ruled by King Baldwin IV (Edward Norton), the "Leper King," who maintains a fragile truce with the legendary Muslim leader Saladin (Ghassan Massoud).
