Set against the backdrop of American suburban sprawl, the film follows , a scheming raccoon who accidentally destroys a hibernating bear's food stash. To avoid being eaten, RJ has one week to replace the items. He manipulates a "family" of forest creatures—led by the cautious tortoise Verne —who have just woken from hibernation to find a massive hedge (the "muro verde") bisecting their forest.
