The story follows Joan Spruance (Ellen Barkin), a divorced opera singer living in Los Angeles who begins receiving threatening phone calls from a masked stalker. Fearing for her safety, she hires Harry Bliss (Jack Nicholson), the fast-talking and morally flexible owner of a guard dog agency.
