The room went black. The last thing Anthony saw was a small, blinking white underscore in the corner of his vision. He realized then that he wasn't the viewer watching the movie. He was the subtitle—a brief flash of text, trying to explain a scene that was already fading to black. The file closed. The desktop was empty.

To anyone else, it was just metadata—a string of technical jargon indicating a high-definition rip of a Florian Zeller film. But to Anthony, it was a glitching compass. He didn’t remember downloading it. He didn’t remember the "EVO" group or why he needed 5.1 surround sound subtitles when he only had the tinny speakers of his aging laptop. He clicked "Open."
