In pre-WWII Austria, a young and free-spirited postulant named Maria is sent from a Salzburg convent to be the governess for the seven children of a widowed naval officer, Captain Georg von Trapp. While the Captain maintains a strict, military-style household, Maria uses music and kindness to win over the children and eventually the stern Captain himself. Their growing happiness is soon threatened by the Nazi annexation of Austria, forcing the family to make a daring escape over the mountains to freedom.
