Set during the final days of , the film follows a group of roughly 400 Koreans who are tricked or forced into labor on Hashima Island (nicknamed "Battleship Island") off the coast of Nagasaki, Japan.
While the characters and escape mission are fictional, the island and the harsh labor conditions Koreans faced there are based on real historical events during the Japanese occupation.
