The story begins when returns home to find his wife, Karen , has vanished. She left in such a hurry that dinner was still on the stove, and her purse, phone, and keys were left behind—behavior completely out of character for her.
Soon, the police inform Tom that Karen has been in a severe car accident in a dangerous part of town. While she survives with a concussion, she suffers from , claiming to have no memory of the accident or why she was in that neighborhood.
