Grace Stewart (Kidman) lives in a secluded, fog-shrouded mansion on the island of Jersey with her two young children, Anne and Nicholas. The children suffer from a rare disease (photosensitivity) that makes them lethally allergic to sunlight, forcing the family to live in near-total darkness behind locked doors and heavy curtains.
