He gobbled up the treat, let out a deep, satisfied sigh, and immediately turned around and walked right back into the kitchen through his new door.

Elias sat on the grass, laughing for the first time in a very long while. He hadn't just bought a piece of plastic and metal from Miller's store. He had bought Barnaby a little more independence, and himself a brand new view of his old friend.

Miller smiled softly and walked over to a high shelf near the back wall. He reached up and pulled down a heavy cardboard box, blowing a thin layer of dust off the top.

Miller raised an eyebrow, setting down his ledger. "A doggie door? Elias, Barnaby hasn’t chased a squirrel since the Obama administration. I didn't think he did much besides sleep and look at the clouds."

"Alright, Barnaby," Elias called, kneeling on the kitchen floor. "Come on, old boy. Freedom." Barnaby didn't move. He blinked slowly.
