Our culture is hyper-Yang. We value "the grind," constant noise, and visible progress. Taoism reminds us that the "empty" space is what makes things useful. A bowl is only useful because of its empty space (Yin). A window is only useful because of the hole in the wall.
In Western thought, we often categorize things into binaries where one side is "correct." In Taoism, Yin (the dark, receptive, cool, feminine) and Yang (the light, active, warm, masculine) are not moral opposites. One isn't better than the other. Yin and Yang the Taoist Harmony of Opposites
