The file hadn't been "dumped" from a console. It had been dumped into his reality.

On the screen, the digital envelope opened. Inside was a photograph of Elias, taken from the perspective of his own monitor, dated three minutes into the future. The final item on the list appeared in blood-red text: The One Standing Behind You.

Elias didn't turn around. He reached for the power button, but his hand stopped. On the screen, a pixelated hand was reaching out from the edge of the "game" window, mirroring his movement.

The first level was a standard hidden object scene—a cluttered Victorian attic. Elias scanned the list: Candelabra. Velvet Glove. Human Tooth. Glass Eye.

The next scene loaded. It wasn't a Victorian attic anymore. It was a high-resolution photograph of a modern office. Elias froze. The office was his. The list on the side of the screen updated: Half-empty Coffee Mug. Worn Keychain. The Letter Under the Door.

Elias looked down. A white envelope had been slid under his real-world office door. His heart hammered against his ribs. He didn't get up. He used the mouse to click the "Letter" in the game.

When he mounted the .xci file, the emulator didn’t show the usual colorful splash screen of a budget puzzle game. Instead, the screen stayed black for ten seconds before a flickering title appeared: THE FINDER.
